Removal of Overburden

All lignite coal mines in North Dakota use electric powered draglines to remove the ground between the subsoil and the coal seam – called the overburden.  One scoop with a large bucket has enough overburden to fill 50 pickups.

Mines also use large electric loading shovels, hydraulic excavators and front-end loaders – combined with large haul trucks – to remove overburden and shallow layers of “interburden” between coal seams.
