The removal of topsoil and subsoil by tractor-scrapers, backhoes or loaders – into large trucks - is one of the first steps in the mining process.  Both the topsoil and subsoil are either directly spread on reclaimed land behind the active pit, or stockpiled for later re-spread on reclaimed land.
