Lignite Energy Council’s Position Statement on EPA’s Proposed Power Plant RulesThe Lignite Energy Council strongly condemns the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) final rules targeting the power sector. These rules will significantly increase the regulatory burden on the North Dakota lignite coal industry, an industry already under substantial regulatory scrutiny. If implemented, these rules threaten to shut down North Dakota power plants and coal mines, eliminating 4,000 megawatts of vital 24/7 power. Such a loss would jeopardize the stability of the power grid, upon which more than two million customers in the Upper Midwest depend.The introduction of multiple simultaneous regulations represents a calculated move to create regulatory uncertainty, severely undermining power companies' operations and their ability to reliably serve their customers. Additionally, the EPA has not substantiated any health benefits from these regulations, which do not justify the significant economic and infrastructural costs North Dakota’s lignite facilities would incur.The North Dakota lignite coal industry is resolute in its fight against an administration that continues to exceed its authority. The EPA has made North Dakota a battleground state, but the Lignite Energy Council is not retreating. We are poised to lead the charge in defending our state, our industry, and our jobs against these federal attacks.
